Nail Drills in Canada – What Nail Techs Actually Need to Know
If you're a nail tech in Canada thinking about buying an e-file (or nail drill, how to call it is still very controversial), or upgrading the one you've got, you've probably got questions. What should you actually look for? Is it worth buying locally?
I got you. Here's what I've learned.
Why Canadian Techs Are Looking for Local Options
There's a reason "nail drill canada" is a common search. Shipping from the US is expensive and slow — especially with the latest tariffs. Trust me, it's been a nightmare for us. We had to suspend express shipping and raise shipping costs to US by A LOT because of the always-changing tariffs and rules.
And if something goes wrong, sending it back across the border is a nightmare.

What Actually Matters in a Nail Drill
Not all e-files are created equal. Here are the things that actually make a difference in daily salon work:
Torque (The Real Power)
Here's the thing about speed ratings — they can be misleading. Two drills can both advertise 35,000 RPM and perform completely differently. One glides through acrylic, the other stalls the moment it touches product.
That difference is torque. Torque is the rotational force behind the bit — the muscle that keeps the drill spinning when it meets resistance. Without torque, it doesn't matter how high your RPM is. As soon as you apply pressure, the drill will stop or skip.
A high-torque drill at 15,000–20,000 RPM can remove material more smoothly than a low-torque drill maxed out at 30,000 RPM. Lower torque means more friction. More friction means more heat. And more heat means more risk of damage to the natural nail.
What to look for: Most techs find they work most consistently in the 10,000–25,000 RPM range anyway — where torque actually matters most. If you're working with acrylics regularly, prioritize torque over top speed.
Speed Range (RPM)
That said, you still want a decent speed range. Something that goes up to 30,000–35,000 RPM gives you flexibility across different services . A good drill should let you dial it down low for delicate cuticle work and crank it up for product removal. But remember — real working power depends on torque, not just the number on the box .
A lot of drills advertise speed of 50,000 RPM. To be honest, this feels like a marketing trick, because that speed is not necessary, and besides — torque beats speed. I find it most bizarre when they mention speed and not torque. Just shows they might not know what they are talking about (at least their marketing team doesn't).
Brushed vs. Brushless vs. Coreless Motors
The motor type makes a bigger difference than most people realize. Here's the breakdown:
Brushed Motors
These use carbon brushes that make physical contact with the motor's rotating part. They're reliable and widely used, but the brushes create friction, which generates heat and vibration over time. Performance can decline as the brushes wear off. Best for: regular nail salon work with breaks in between sessions, not continuous heavy work all day non-stop.
Brushed handpieces are perfectly fine for most nail techs — you can still get a good 5–10, even 15 years with good maintenance. But eventually you'll need to replace the brushes, and not all handpieces come with replaceable parts and are repairable (ours do, and we can repair the brushed handpieces we sell).
Coreless Motors
Instead of a heavy iron core, the rotor is made of lightweight copper windings. Less inertia means faster response, lower vibration, and cooler operation. This gives you more precision for detail work like cuticle clean-up and natural nail refinement. Saeshin Brillian B100 offers a coreless handpiece option that weighs just 162g. Best for: techs who prioritize comfort, precision, and low vibration.
Brushless Motors

No physical brushes — the motor uses electronics to manage power delivery. The result is extremely stable torque, very low noise, and a much longer lifespan. Brushless motors maintain torque consistently even under heavy resistance — no power drop under load. They run quieter and stay cooler, making them ideal for high-volume salon work. Best for: high-volume salon work, acrylic specialists, techs who want something that will last. But they are much more expensive, and honestly can be an overkill for most nail technicians.
Portable vs. Static (Corded)
This comes down to how and where you work:
Portable (Cordless)
Runs on a rechargeable battery. Gives you total freedom of movement — great for mobile techs, home use, or salon setups where outlets aren't conveniently placed. Lighter weight (usually around 160g for the handpiece) makes them easy to handle. The trade-off: battery life is limited, and power can drop as the battery drains. Brushless cordless drills like the Saeshin Strong B170 or Saeyang MINI CRO maintain torque well under load, but they're more expensive than corded models. Best for: mobile techs, travel, or techs who value mobility over unlimited runtime.
Static (Corded)

Plugs directly into the wall. No battery anxiety, no power drop-off, consistent torque from start to finish. Can run all day without overheating. Usually more powerful and better suited for heavy-duty acrylic removal. The downside: you're tethered to an outlet, and the cord can get in the way. Best for: salons with dedicated stations, high-volume techs doing back-to-back clients, anyone who needs consistent power for hours at a time.
Our most popular e-files are corded with brushed handpieces — for example, the classic Saeshin Strong 210 or Saeyang Marathon 3 Champion. These are staple e-files. You can honestly pick any of our Classic e-files and it will work for most nail techs.
One thing to note: portable drills are getting better. But that performance comes at a premium — you're paying for the engineering.
Vibration and Noise
This is one of those things you don't think about until you've been using a drill for three hours straight. A well-balanced handpiece with low vibration makes a huge difference in hand fatigue. And quiet operation? Your clients will thank you. Brushless motors are typically quieter — some run as low as 43dB compared to 60dB for brushed motors.
Handpiece Comfort
(that's not a nail drill handpiece ↑)
If it doesn't feel good in your hand, you won't want to use it. Look for something lightweight and ergonomic. Coreless and brushless motors tend to run cooler and vibrate less, which makes the handpiece more comfortable over long sessions. But here we have a trade: power for weight. The lighter handpieces can not have a higher torque — and if a drill claims it does, it might not be true.
Some of our lightest handpieces — Saeshin H300 or Saeyang SH20N — have torque of 3.0 N.cm (lower end of 3.0 in my experience). Which is still perfectly fine for most nail techs! But if you need a stronger torque 4.5 and more for heavy all-day use and pedicure, like, say Saeshin H450 — you are looking at a heavier weight.
Build Quality
"Buy cheap, buy twice" is real with e-files. Cheap ones vibrate, overheat, and need replacing. Quality tools from reputable brands actually last.
The short version: torque is what actually does the work. RPM is just the ceiling. Motor type determines how smooth, quiet, and durable the drill is. And whether you go portable or static depends entirely on your work style — but if you go portable, brushless is worth the extra cost.
E-file Safety and Best Practices

Avoid leaving the handpiece empty and unclicked — always have any bit inside.

Wipe with alcohol napkin. DO NOT spray with water, and when you clean the desk, make sure the drill is not in the vicinity. If water or liquid gets into the handpiece, it will attract dust, and you'll need cleaning much sooner. Absolutely do not use any product with hydrogen peroxide, even if it's recommended by authorities (do not use it on any metal tools or bits really, unless you want them to rust).

Perform regular maintenance. We offer cleaning and repair by the way.

Use the correct electric system. It might be a bit cheaper purchasing an e-file from your home country during the trip, but make sure it's the same voltage and designed for Canadian plugs.

Always opt for original parts. This is not the case where you can buy a cheaper part on Amazon, this is actually crucial, especially when it comes to spare parts like bearings or cords.

Don't overwork your drill. Look, these tools are built to last, but they're not invincible. Running them non-stop at max speed for hours will take a toll eventually. Most of our drills have automatic overload protection — if things get too hot, the motor will shut off and give itself a breather. When that happens, just let it cool down before you jump back in. But honestly? Don't rely on that as your only line of defense. Treat it like you'd treat any good tool — respect it, and it'll respect you back.
